Who is the Course for?

The course is aimed at individuals wanting to develop entrepreneurial careers or for those wishing to work in the vast non-design sectors within the fashion industry. Students can take a specialization at the end of the year and focus on one or two of the modules in the final term based on their future professional aims.

Course Introduction

This Post Graduate Programme has a higher emphasis on professional practice within a global context where individuals experience an industry focused curriculum with live projects with some the leading fashion & luxury brands in the country.

Students are encouraged to work towards industry focused projects with a strong emphasis on research and interdisciplinary experimentation. At the end of the year students are given an internship to facilitate progression into professional careers in their area of interest.

Students also explore entrpreneurial opportunities at the end of the course with mentoring and support from academics at FAD International.

Course Curriculum & Modules

The course during the first term gives students a holistic base in fashion, retail and luxury sectors thus enabling students from varied backgrounds to be able to further choose a specialization in the second term.

Students get an opportunity to work on live projects as part of the modules whilst being mentored and taught by industry professionals.

Students work both individually and in groups with professionals from other departments such as photography, media, art, styling, fashion design etc. Combined with guest faculties from the industry and international universities, students are exposed to a variety of critiques and audiences across the industry. The Europe Study Tour further gives students a unique opportunity to interact with international designers, brands and academicians and visit the fashion weeks, thus giving them a platform to progress onto the professional world.

In the first term students are taught the fundamental building blocks required for choosing a study pathway and in the second term where students specialize in following stream:

Fashion Communication
This specialization will emphasize on communicating fashion through all media formats such as journalism (print, electronic or new media), events and promotions, public relations, advertising, visual merchandising and styling. The specialization is well supported through group projects with the media, art and the creative business departments at FAD International where students work on industry driven projects commissioned by the media, fashion & luxury brands or self proposed by students. The specialisation allows students to achieve an extensive and a professional portfolio of work which forms the base for further progression into the industry.

The Spring Fashion Communication semester forms the basis of the program by drawing together the various disciplines that make up the core vision of the program. Project work and collaboration with companies and industry professionals as the foundation of the IED philosophy.

A prime example is the Fashion Communication and Events course, which in 2011 saw students develop, organize and produce a social media communication campaign and press release articles for Fendi’s special project series “Fatto a Mano for the Future”, during the Pitti Uomo fashion week. The event was created with Fendi and involved strategic communication and interviews carried out with new media instruments including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, YouStream and using Ipads, Iphones and other video sources to create a worldwide live participatory experience.

    The application of highly-evolved digital tools to the visual languages of fashion. The curriculum provides students with the basic grounding they need to use the most important programs for processing and transforming images, as well as for mounting and retouching them.

  • FASHION COMMUNICATION
    Students learn the correct methods and criteria to consider in creating a fashion communication strategy. The fashion sector as a new type of communications that ranges from the advertising message to the major event.

  • FASHION MATERIALS
    The course offers an analysis of the factors that contribute to the structure of a fashion collection: from the production of fabrics to the composition of a fashion product and the different elements that create it.
     
  • HISTORY OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY
    The greatest fashion photographers and their impact on aesthetic ideals. Their techniques and style of composition, influences and connections with the art world. Technical analysis of the main photographers’ styles.

  • INTRODUCTION TO FASHION EVENTS
    Covers the basics of Fashion Event planning and communicating starting with the study of case histories of events. Deals with the interconnectivity of physical and digital planning and how to effectively manage a project, client or event with digital tools to increase integrated communication strategies.

  • VISUAL LANGUAGE
    Introduction to aesthetics; an historical and critical analysis of the most important modern and contemporary artistic and fashion movements, in relation to the development of society and of culture.

  • HISTORY OF FASHION
    The evolution of styles and tastes in Western fashions from its origins to the mid- nineteenth century. In addition to providing a basic historical and cultural grounding, the course sets out to stimulate the development of the critical and analytical skills necessary for students to interpret contemporary trends.
